I was a smoker for 20 years, and at the height of my smoking habit, I was consuming, on average, 40 cigarettes a day. The death of my father, a lifelong smoker, and a warning from my wife, a medical doctor, forced me to consider quitting. Quitting was extremely difficult, and I failed many times, which was disheartening to the point where I just subscribed to the fact that I would always be a smoker. This is until I stumbled across a person selling vape products from the boot of his car in our company parking lot. I decided to give it a try. Within three days, I stopped smoking. That was nearly ten years ago, and I have not had a single drag from a cigarette since. Since I stopped smoking, I have noticed many positive changes in my life, which many take for granted. My sense of smell and taste has returned. I can climb a flight of stairs or even take long walks. I am less prone to flu and colds, which frequently occurred as a smoker. My fingertips are not yellow, and my teeth are less stained. Most importantly, other than feeling healthier, I get more hugs from my family and never have to be self-conscious about how I smell.
I still vape, which for many is not considered a successful quit, but my fear of going back to smoking and feeling healthier keeps me vaping. I am dependent on nicotine, and I choose to consume it in a far safer way.
My experiences relating to smoking, quitting, and the benefits of tobacco harm reduction pushed me in the direction of becoming a consumer THR activist. Far too many suffer and are hurt, and I genuinely believe that tobacco harm reduction could benefit those who fail or are unwilling to quit attain a better quality of life.
